How to be an embodiment of urban, provocative cool: Berlin Fashion Week – Autumn/Winter 2016 – PART II!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.

In Berlin, fashion and design labels present themselves with work that can be described as inventive, experimental, expressive and so very urban, and so the other week, I told you about Berlin Fashion Week – Autumn/Winter 2016.

I had so much to tell you that I had to split the post up. Here’s what you missed: How to be an embodiment of urban, provocative cool – PART I!

Now that’s sorted out, let’s go on!

WHERE DID I ACTUALLY GO?

Which way is Fashion Week? THE WYLD at Friedrichstadt-Palast, Berlin.

DAY THREE (3)!

ANJA GOCKEL

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.

Anja Gockel was presented on the RUNWAY as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.

Being an item on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin is a big thing.

A big thing indeed, as the Mercedes-Benz fashion campaign brings together some of fashion’s most inspiring and creative talents with the acme of automotive technology to present a fabulous, future-facing hybrid of style and sustainability!

Anja Gockel was no exception and is a collection inspired by the then Burma freedom fighter “Suu.” Her collections are often based on strong women who also have no qualms celebrating their femininity.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016

I once again found myself on the front row with German celebrities right, left, and centre and camera lights popping away. Sadly, I hadn’t a clue who they were!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.

The clothes had an Asian theme with one of the models doing a sort of Bollywood dance! The clothes were bright burnt orange with orange poppies and long-trailing capes. High-heeled flower-patterned wedges, tightly tapered trousers and high-waisted belts. Lots of orange, black, aubergine, pink, greys, and pale blues. Materials were wool and silk, black patterned tights, sexy ankle socks (yes!) orange eyeshadow, pink lipstick and some sort of powder on their foreheads! Long hair done in a twist.

My type of colours.

Very wearable!

In fact, I actually got to meet Anja herself. She’s lovely.

  • BRACHMANN

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.

The BRACHMANN collection this season played with space, layers, and surfaces.

Using experimental photography as it’s theme, clothes were cut with strong architectural lines, geometric forms and patch pleats. Colours were dark blue and copper. Shiny leather shoes, linen suits and a button-up shirt. The look of a modern-day gentleman-about-town.

Doesn’t he look smart?

And like other fashion houses, using English wool in coats and jackets to give an impression of minimalistic elegance and urban chic!

A mini-titbit!
A mini-titbit!

I was due to visit a couple of fashion tradeshows so before I left, I availed myself of the fashion lounge, did a little networking, had two (2) glasses of champagne, two (2) cups of hot chocolate, some mini-Asian titbits and got myself a Mercedes-Benz car!

It’s a really cool place with a huge amount of space and lots of really interesting fashion wear. They’ve got a good press room where you can relax with a refreshing drink, read a magazine and re-charge! However, I had “lunch” at Liebeskind!

PREMIUM – Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

PREMIUM also has lots of other stylish things going on as I had two nails wrapped in gold glitter and there were fashion cheques floating around which meant you could get free nail varnish too! Lots of fashionable photo ops. here n’ there, and just basically an all round cool chic venue.

I could go on and go but this time I’ll leave you with some photographs instead!

The FASHIONTECH conference is the platform for all up-coming ideas and business models that influence the way fashion is designed, produced, distributed, marketed and sold.

I absolutely love this conference and last year I only had time for one workshop. This time I picked five (5) and I wasn’t alone, as the venue was packed! It’s at the location of PREMIUM and the workshops are totally free of charge!

#FASHIONTECH BERLIN-KONFERENZ – The Conference on the Future of Fashion – Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

Wow!

My day was pretty busy but I made it a priority to attend SNAPCHAT and Pinterest.

SNAPCHAT isn’t really my thing but it never hurts to learn what’s out there, so I went to a workshop called: SNAPCHAT – How to embrace the new (social media) revolution.

Snapchat
Snapchat

It was really interesting as SNAPCHAT has no visible followers or likes, no stress on FOMO (fear of missing out) and is pretty spontaneous and refreshing!

Pinterest
Pinterest

Pinterest has been around for a little while and is a platform that helps people discover things they love, so that they are inspired to use it in real life! I went to: Keys to Success – How to kickstart and maintain a successful pinterest presence.

If you’re big on fashion or home decor, that’s the platform to go for!

I’ve been thinking of adding another social media application and that’s probably going to be the one!

GREEN FASHION TOUR THROUGH PRENZLAUERBERG

Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

I really wanted to go on this fashion tour as I like to support local artists and it’s in my gentrified suburb, but I really couldn’t be in two places at the same time so I opted for FASHIONTECH instead!

This event was a fashion tour through the suburb of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg in which public transport is used to discover local designers and concept stores that offer a selection of upcycling, fair trade and sustainably designed objects and clothing.

PARTY THREE (3)!

So the evening was a little long as I was invited to five (5) parties but managed to get to three (3) as it’s all about pacing!

POP UP Fashion Berlin

POP UP Fashion Berlin Berlin Fashion Week 2016.
POP UP Fashion Berlin
Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

This POP UP party was organised by #FashionTech and was in the BIKINI building. This get-together had cool model presentations and free drinks however, by the time that I got there most people were already giggling away and looking quite dazed, so I moved on!

LNFA TRIPLE LAUNCH: NETWORK IN FASHION & FILM

LNFA Triple Launch: Network in Fashion & Film. Berlin Fashion Week 2016.
LNFA Triple Launch: Network in Fashion & Film.
Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

This after-party event was a combination of the technology launch of a new photo production line by YDL Fashion Network, the launch of a new campaign by LNFA (Live, Network, Fashion & Art) and an introduction to the programme of the Berlin Fashion Film Festival 2016 and a way for the fashion set to network and sip on a few cocktails.

In truth, this particular party was about 30 seconds away from POP UP Fashion Berlin so it was easy to get to!

The LNFA is a chilled crowd and people are easy to talk to.

I was already beginning to droop a little so I got myself a snack of currywurst and chips before moving on to my last party of the evening.

PANORAMA PARTY

PANORAMA BERLIN Berlin Fashion Week 2016.
PANORAMA BERLIN
Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

All the fashion trade houses had an after-party planned out and it’s always difficult to decide which one to choose so I opted for the one nearest my home!

PANORAMA hosted their part at Ungarn Haus in Mitte. At Alexanderplatz.

Easy to get home from!  And since public transport in Berlin is super efficient, I only needed to hop on one train and be home in four (4) stops!

PANORAMA BERLIN Berlin Fashion Week 2016.

The DJ was jamming and the fashion set were hopping. There was an open bar and I managed to recognise a few local politicians hanging out!

The only snag was that people were puffing away as if smoking had gone out of style!

Great party. Brilliant crowd.

DAY FOUR (4)!

This was my last day so I tried to pack everything in!

STEINROHNER

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin – Autumn/Winter 2016.

The STEINROHNER collection was at the STAGE and I was at the RUNWAY ‘cos I’d forgotten! Thankfully, I wasn’t alone as there were loads of press people practically running to get the Mercedes-Benz bus!

Inspiration was found in Switzerland and Russia!

The models were presented in a loose circle which you had to walk around.

I’m a fashionista, so I pucker my lips, twirl my skirt, and put on my kitten heels to attend the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin – Spring/Summer 2016!

So Friday was effectively the last official day of Berlin Fashion Week.

After a flurry of stylish heels and outfits, exclusive red carpets and impressive runway shows and presentations, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin ended its 17th season with more than 50 designers presenting their Spring/Summer 2016 Collections.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin - Save the Date

Phewwwwwwy!

What a fabulous week it was.

Berlin Fashion Week

Faaaashion Week.

Now take note. I’m not a fashion blogger. I couldn’t even tell you who is wearing what, when or how, next season!

What I can tell you, is how to do your own thing and be your own personal style icon.

What I can show you, is how to live of both style and travel because if I can do it.

So can you.

This year, Berlin Fashion Week took place from 06.07.15 – 10.07.15.

Last season I bit off far more than I could chew, packed far too many things in, went a bit over-board and exhausted myself running all over the city and quaffing on champagne and gin and tonic!

Berlin's most iconic Brandenburg Gate - Let the good times roll!
Berlin’s most iconic Brandenburg Gate – Let the good times roll!

This season, I was better prepared and booked a few days out in order to take advantage of all the possibilities that the fashion week had to offer.

You know how much I really like Berlin and the fact that the opportunities here abound for all who are ready to work hard and find their own creative space. That is why even though my blog is centered on lifestyle and travel rather than fashion per se, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin (MBFWB) fully accredited me as a member of the press industry and honestly, every time I see my press pass it makes me feel so honoured and also enormously proud.

I mean, who would have thought that I, a lifestyle expat travel blogger of less than two (2) years would get the chance. THE CHANCE to not only attend Berlin Fashion Week, but also the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin!

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin is the cherry on the top of all that is fashion in this town. I mean, they are the cat’s pajamas LOL!

Thank you so much Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin!

LOL!

I get a little help from my friiiiiiiends!

Phew!

AND IN LAYMAN’S TERMS?

Well, the focus this season was on linen, huge flowers and prints, sleek clean lines, long shorts, cream, grey, pale blue and brown, long hair with bold and intricate plaits for the girls and either long hair or side-parted crops for the boys and leather or platform slip-ons, and a deliberate overlap between fashion and technology.

CAN ANYONE GO TO FASHION WEEK?

Of course!

You sure can.

Many events were “by invitation only” but if you’re a member of the public and are really interested in the designer, you only have to write to their P.R. or agent, and ask! Besides, there were many other events in which you could either buy a ticket to attend or were “open to the public” anyway.

Do note that one of the reasons many events were “by invitation only” was because of the space. You want to be comfortable, safe and secure. And the same goes for the models and everyone who is attending. Safety first.

Myself at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.
In my heeled kittens!

Unlike a certain after-party that I went to that was so “popular” that security had to close the entrance. At one point people began to get squashed and were piling on the stairs!

I took it as my cue to leave and the security guys were very helpful in keeping me safe. More about the social parties next week…!

LESSONS LEARNT:

  • Reply ASAP!
  • No, really.
  • ASAP!
  • Say “yes” to everything.
  • Once you say “yes,” put everything in order with the date, time and location.
  • So now that you’ve said “yes,” don’t try to do everything at all! Confusing isn’t it?!
  • Do some, and politely decline the others!
  • Use all the exclusive Mercedes-Benz shuttle services provided from the main venue at Brandenburg Gate, to the offsite events for accredited press and media.
  • Wear comfy shoes at the trade fair shows and “fashion” shoes at the “real” Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.
  • Don’t forget to eat.
  • Drink lots and lots of water.

Stay tuned!

If you’re going to dance the night away – Do it in Berlin!

On the red carpet at Berlin's Night of Fashion, 2014.
On the red carpet at Berlin’s Night of Fashion, 2014.

This really is the last hurrah as Berlin Fashion Week is ultimately over.

For now.

But what a flicker and a bang. Berlin Fashion Week was awesome and although it was a lot of networking and running around, I sure had some fun.

Yeah, baby!

As you know. I’m not a person to shy away from parties and one of the ultimate round ups of Fashion Week are the fashion parties dotted around the city and surely, if you’re going to dance the night away – then do it in Berlin!

I went to a few after-party places with live D.J.’s spinning their discs and live singers from the USA. The venues had give-away booze and a free bar which I really appreciated, after a hard-day n ‘all but they weren’t the real fancy places.

Nope!

The real places that you had to get to. I mean absolutely needed to.

Are below.

Read on:

SO, WHERE DID I GO?

Just look at that space. Imagine clubbing here. It was great! @Kraftwerk Berlin
Just look at that space. Imagine clubbing here. It was great!
@Kraftwerk Berlin

1.  Kraftwerk Berlin was the industrial venue utilized by SHOW&ORDER for their fashion trade show, exhibitions and designs.

Kraftwerk Berlin is a former abandoned heating power station based in the suburb of now-gentrified “Mitte”: A piece of the city’s pre-industrial, Berlin Wall, era of East Berlin. An open gallery of concrete passages that maze into basement vaults and industrial halls, floors, and levels with a unique space volume of a 100 meters in length and a ceiling height of 20 meters, perfect for the Berlin style of clubbing, and now home to that most brilliant of clubs – Tresor.

Americans know a good thing when they see it! The Tresor Movie Premier in Detroit.
Americans know a good thing when they see it!
The Tresor Movie Premier in Detroit.

2.  TRESOR BERLIN was created and founded by Dimitri Hegemann who was looking for a place that would bring together the voice and sound of Berlin of the 90’s.

That’s right: Techno music, Experimental Electronic Music, and House Music – all the music that incidentally, I happen to like (although I also like classical music) !

I came to Berlin when TRESOR was in the previous location of Leipziger Straße.

God, those were the days!!

The club was hard-core and dirty, grimy, and gritty. The walls were old and covered in dust, mud, and sweat, with planks of wood, bricks and rocks scattered about. The crowd was young and recovering from the German re-unification or just wanting to pound out their life frustrations, and the music reflected that in hard industrial-core sound and rough, loud, pounding techno.

It was great!

In 2005, the club closed down due to the prime estate of the region and re-opened at it’s new venue – Kraftwerk Berlin – in 2006.

3.  LUNA PARK via BREAD&BUTTER was kitted out Brazilian style with beautiful samba dancers in skimpy bikinis, and copper-skinned drummers. We were invited to the VIP area at the front of the man-made Copacabana Beach and provided with complimentary mojitos, ice-buckets of water and beer, and a tasty Brazilian / German BBQ fit for a god. Music was supplied by a Danish rock band based in Berlin called Dúné.

It rained quite a bit but the rain didn’t dampen our enthusiasm but I had to leave prematurely as Germany were playing Brazil at the FIFA World Cup and I didn’t want to miss the match. I’m glad that I watched it at home with my family and close friends as Germany thrashed Brazil 7:1!

4.  CHALET was the venue of the “by invitation only” PREMIUM PARTY in the artistic suburb of Kreuzberg. That very same suburb that if you recall, I went on an alternative walking tour to.

The party was to start at 21:00 but being Berlin, I arrived at about 22:30. It was a bit difficult to find as it was raining and I had taken a route that included both the mainline train and the underground train and it was getting darker and darker. I don’t do well if it’s dark and I’m in an unfamiliar part of time, dressed up to the nines and carrying a small red handbag! Luckily, I bumped into two British guys so we walked around together and just followed a bunch of random people who were also dressed up. Berliners tend to dress more casually.

Ahem!

Anyway, we finally reached CHALET, went in through the VIP entrance and got our wrists stamped when I realised that I had been there before!

It’s a decadent abandoned 150 year-old mansion and in a hip part of Kreuzberg near the river and subsequently, where the cool clubs are. The last time I was there was at a surprise bachelorette / hen night party for a girlfriend of mine and we were all sworn not to research where we were going!

At the time (last year), it was a weird Alice in Wonderland set-up. The only way we could get in was by me being the spokesperson as the other girls were German. (I know. I know!) AND there was a four (4) hour – I kid you not, waiting list. We got in 60 minutes later and that was an effort as we weren’t on the waiting list and there were six (6) of us and we wanted to go in together.  Very worth it though as there were vintage lamps and armchairs, lots of tunnels that you either had to slide or jump into and tiny doors that you had to crawl into to get out. It was crazy, but brilliant.

A weird version of Alice in Wonderland!

Anyway, I digress.

Oh yes.

CHALET.

On this particular evening, the crowd was heaving in the garden and there was some sort of Roma (I think) band  playing and lots of clicking and “whoopa” in the air, so we joined in. There was an open bar with complimentary champagne, cocktails, red bull, energy drinks, and cocktails.

It began to rain again and I thought about making my way home when I went into one of the inner rooms in the main building and found house and techno music playing. I could have been having so much more fun!

Did I go home? Er, no!

I got myself a few more drinks and carried on dancing. The music was louder. The crowd was younger. The room was darker. And the music was better.

Yeeeeees!

By 00:45, I really did have to make my way home as most of the people there would be checking into a hotel but since I actually live in Berlin, I’d have to make my way home by public transport.

Umm. It’s not the weekend which means the last underground train has probably gone.

Taxi it is then.

But I’ve only got €12.00 in my purse.

Credit card perhaps?

OK. I stepped outside of the club after collecting a lovely white umbrella that the staff of PREMIUM had been handing out and I saw a Fashion Week Mercedes-Benz van outside the club. Now, usually, these vans are for the models and VIP’s but desperate times n’ all that..

“Are you a taxi?”

“No!”

“Can you take me to the station anyway. For free.”

“Yes.”

“I meant, for free.”

“Yes!”

“OK. Stop joking. Can you take me for free. Nada. Zilch.”

“Yes!”

“Are you sure now ‘cos I’ve only got €12.00 in my handbag!”

“Yes, madam!”

“OK then. How far can you actually take me?” “Can you take me to the underground station?” “Actually, can you take me to a station up North as I actually live on the other side of the city?!!”

The drivers took me to the nearest connecting train station on my route. For free. I was home within 20 minutes and I couldn’t believe how nice they were. A great night.

The last party that I went to was the grand finale and the final hurrah of the Berlin Fashion Week.

I found out about this party at the Decoded Fashion & Premium “by invitation only” networking event. I befriended a Ukranian-Russian bloggers who lives in Hamburg called Julia from jolimentblog.com. She very kindly told me about an important party: Berlin’s Night of Fashion.

5.  Berlin’s Night of Fashion or BNOF is an event that was created by an agency called after NetWork in 2009 by an exciting, enthusiastic man called Peter Schuler. Berlin’s Night of Fashion is a night where the media, models, photographers, makeup artists, casting agencies, headhunters, fashion individuals, businessmen and sponsors can come together, for a night.

Peter was fantastic, as I Emailed him only 72 hours before the actual night and he was a really good trooper and counted me in. It went so well that I even found myself at Block H. Row 1. Seat Nr. 5.

On the front row!

Right close to the stage where the models come out!

I felt so special and fashion-like.

Wow!

Berlin’s Night of Fashion is in its 9th year and this was the first time that I had ever been to a real catwalk fashion show before, not to talk of the front row.

I mean. Yeaaaaah!

WHAT WAS THE CATWALK REALLY LIKE?

I was sitting at the front and it was an awesome feeling. I felt as if I were a journalist from the likes of Vogue or Cosmopolitan and I kept thinking I would  see the reflection of Anna Wintour’s sunglasses (American Vogue) or be hushed by Alexandra Shulman (British Vogue)! It must be over-whelming to have so many people looking at you all the time, but you know. I cope.

Oh, you meant the models!

Yes, I suppose it must be over-whelming to…. but they’re fantastically professional so I guess that it’s OK.

Having fun at Berlin's Night of Fashion.
Having fun at Berlin’s Night of Fashion.

The night consisted of the Red Carpet, photography and fashion networking so I milled around, got my photo taken, took others, and generally chatted to one and all. There was musical entertainment and then a catwalk presentation by the fashion houses below and these were my first impressions of my very first catwalk show!

  • STEAMPUNK PRINCESS: A sort of wedding dress theme with lots of feathers, flowers, lace, ruffles and frills. And high heels with a distinct whiff of a “Great Expectations” theme from Charles Dickens. The sexy wardrobe of Miss Havisham before she became completely bonkers. I loved the shoes as most of them were either gold or silver.
  • VAL D’AZUR: Exclusive swimwear that I could quite nicely see myself wearing. One shoulder pieces with chiffon covering bikinis, lace-wool kaftans, and lovely high-heeled sandals and wedges. Some of the designs were quite sexy in a “Game of Thrones” type of way!
  • LIVING FACES: Feathers and tight leggings with Tim Burton type make-up and fashion. Think “Corpse Bride” with black and white feathers, horns and wings. Long hair with elaborate styles, and strong make-up with vivid colours but in a dark, gothic and quirky way.

  • ROCKMÄDCHEN: Black velvet, “Spanish” tartan, black and white checked and patterned dresses or black frills, lace, ruffles and the Spanish coat of arms. Dark brooding looks, long skirts, red lipstick and dark wavy hair. Rock girls. Spanish style!
  • RODAN LEDERDESIGN: An ingenious idea. The designer brought to the catwalk 36 styles of the same design and dress – plain, coloured, leopard print, leather, bold patterns, zebra prints, chains, and even the national World Cup FIFA football colours of Argentina and Germany before we thrashed them too, in an exciting but breathtaking game of Germany 1: Argentina 0.

I had a great time. Thanks so much everyone.

See you in 2015!

This article is not sponsored and even though I received complimentary press passes to all the amazing parties, all opinions, are my very own!

Next week, I will be writing about SHEER MADNESS, and thereafter, now that the weather is sunny and warm, the rather astonishing rivers and lakes of Berlin.

July is going to be a beautiful month outdoor and in.

Watch this space!

Many thanks once again to SHOW&ORDER, BREAD & BUTTER, PREMIUM International Fashion Trade Fair, Mercedes-Benz Exclusive Shuttle Service, and Berlin’s Night of Fashion. I had a really wonderful time. Thank you so much.

Would you like to go to a club in Berlin? Were you here when electronic and techno music was all the rage?  Have you ever been on the red carpet?

Are you coming for the summer?

See you in Berlin.
