I cannot under-estimate how much I love living in Germany.

I mean, I shout about it loud enough and it was just four (4) years ago that I introduced myself to you on this blog, when I wrote a cheeky article which most people didn’t seem to get. And the title? Germany is Boring.

Oops!

Ah well, either way, it’s going to be interesting.

As The British Berliner, I have been living in Germany for more than fifteen (15) years, so I’m more than qualified to tell you how things are done the German Way! 

I mean, what is the big deal?

It’s the fact that Germany.

Otherwise known as Deutschland!

Has been together in peace and harmony for 28 years.

How I went on the radio for the BBC & was featured in Germany’s biggest Sunday newspaper!

Some people might think that by coming to Berlin or Munich for a lost weekend, they know everything they need to know about the German people.

Not so my friends.

It’s a little more complicated than that, so I’m going to help you!

HOW TO BE A GERMAN – 10 WAYS TO DO IT!

Just so that you know what mean, here’s a 2004 MTV commercial called Günther, otherwise known as Mum, Dad, I’m German…

It’s totally ridiculous but absolutely hilarious, and very tongue-in-cheek. Watch the video below!

1.  LOOK THE PART AND WEAR SANDALS AND CLOGS. INDOORS!

When I first came to Germany, I was amazed at the number of men who wore sandals.

With socks!

The last time I wore leather sandals was when I was a school girl, and they were a sensible pair of Clarks!

However, in order to be as German as the next person, I wear Birkenstocks at home. With socks!

I even wore Birkenstocks at my wedding!

And in my defence, I had been wearing killer high heels all day which I had changed three (3) times!

I know!

2.  HAVE LUNCH FOR BREAKFAST!

Germans aren’t known for the minimal look as far as food is concerned. They’re not French you know!

During the week, a typical German breakfast is a bun known as a brötchen. It’s usually covered with cold cuts and cheese with mustard, and a variety of other sauces.

Many German families, including my own, would queue for hours in order to get the freshest amount of bread straight from the bakery. And yes, many people still go to the bakery!

In fact, just five (5) minutes from my home is the family-owned and oldest bakery in Berlin – Bäckerei Siebert – and is still going strong after 111 years!

A most delicious breakfast spread you can expect, in a typical German home!

Then they arrange their tables so that there’s a wide variety of cold cuts, sausages, cheese, seafood, eggs, fruit, and a wide assortment of bread!

The first time, I had breakfast with my German family, it was such a mish-mash of food that halfway through the meal, I left the table and was sick in the bathroom! It was too much you see, so get ready to gird your loins, as there’s no escaping!

3.  SAUSAGES!

All hail the almighty S!

The very highlight of a typical German day is the sausage, so if you want to be a German, learn how to like it!

Germany has loads of different sausages and each comes with its own unique taste.

I find the white sausage with sweet mustard or Weißwürst quite disgusting personally, even though I’ve tried it every which way.

Ah well!

Delicious grilled pork sausages, otherwise known as bratwurst. Yum!

My favourite German sausage however, is the currywurst. The currywurst is Berlin’s most famous sausage.

Currywurst is beef or pork sausage grilled and chopped up, then smothered with a spicy ketchup and curry powder. It’s eaten with a pile of chips and a slice of bread or a bun.

It’s such a famous icon that it even has its own Currywurst Museum where you can learn how currywurst is made, smell it, watch a film about it, attempt to sell it, and play around with the french fries and chips. You can sometimes even have chocolate and curry ice-cream!

If you’re vegan or a vegetarian however, you’re done for!

4.  RECYCLING!

I’m happy to say that Germany is the leading country as far as going green is concerned, and they’ve been doing it for years!

I remember when I first came to Germany, and I casually put a piece of paper into the dustbin, my German boyfriend at the time, literally freaked out.

It was the wrong dustbin!

A dustbin for glass.

A dustbin for metal.

A dustbin for organic stuff.

A dustbin for dog poo.

A charity bin for clothes with a different compartment for shoes. Of course.

There’s even a dustbin for batteries!

And every supermarket will encourage you to leave your cardboards boxes and plastic packaging behind, if you so wish.

Oh, and most people have recycling bags that they take with them for shopping.

And don’t think you can sneak your large items into the backyard, as the dustbin men won’t take them, and you’ll be charge for “littering!”

We even have our own organic compost “bin” in the garden!

5.  PUNCTUALITY!

If you want to be a German, don’t be late!

If you want to be a German, if your appointment is at 09:00, make sure you arrive there on the dot, or better still, a few minutes before. However, if you arrive twenty (20) seconds later, you’re late!

Mind you, don’t be like the strange fellow that I invited to a Christmas dinner party I was organising. He arrived at 17:00, and the invitation was for 20:00!

I sent him away!

6.  SMALL TALK ISN’T A THING!

No need to worry. I’ll do the talking!

I live in Germany.

I have quite a knack for small talk.

Most Germans haven’t.

They don’t seems to understand what I mean by “small” talk. They think we British people are trying to evade the subject.

Don’t be shy. Speak plainly if you like her hair!

Germans believe in speaking plainly and clearly, about what is on their minds!

I once had some random stranger who stopped me on the street, and told me that he didn’t like my hair style!

See.  Plain and true. No beating around the bush here!

Oh, and talking about the private issue of how much you earn, could get you fired!

If you want to be a German, forget about it.

Let it go!

It’s against the law!

7.  LONG CONVERSATIONS!

If you want to be a German, ask more questions! How to be a German – 10 ways to do it!

If you want to be a German, learn the art of a long conversation and long meetings. There’s no need to say something in one (1) minute, that could better be said in ten (10)!

What’s the hurry?

Slow down.

Don’t make your mind up too quickly.

Sleep on it.

Discuss it a bit more over lunch, and a few pints of beer.

Then let’s talk about it again next week!

8.  DOCUMENTATION!

Bring along all your documentation!

For the laymen among you, that means paperwork and certification!

If you want to settle into German life, and you don’t have any certificates, you won’t get very far. After all, how would they know that you’ve “done it,” if they can’t record it, and file it away somewhere!

Germany is a high-technology country, but as far as paperwork and bureaucracy is concerned, it might as well be back in the Dark Ages!

Put the kettle on. We’re going to be here all day!

So bring along document A, as well as three copies of document B, signed by the Head of Department, who gave you document C, then send them all by post with a verified stamp, and document D!

And that the Bavarians aren’t really Germans!

But it isn’t true.

And I should know ‘cos I’m more German than the Germans. So there!

And for goodness sake. Whatever you do, please don’t order water at the bar.

10.  BE INFORMED ABOUT GERMAN HISTORY!

Learning how to be a German is lots of fun, but if you want to be a real German, you’ll have to know and understand your history.

It’s Autumn.

It’s October.

And it’s starting to rain but no matter! I’m going to tell you how Summery it was on the Baltic Sea beach.

It was gorgeous!

The sun was shining, the locals were smiling, and we were living it up in a five-star hotel in Usedom!

I’ve already spoken about Usedom and going to the seaside. I wrote 51 reasons why you should go to the seaside in Germany last week, and quite frankly, if you’re not convinced by that, then I really can’t help you!

There’s loads of things going on in October so I’ll tell you all about it. Next week!

But for now, let’s focus on food.

Not just any old food you  understand, but German food.

Eeek!

I hear you say. Isn’t German food really gritty and full of stodge?

It can be.

But it can also be quite the thing. Especially at Xmas where the alcohol was so strong that I literally fell to the floor!

So would the beach be somewhat similar to seaside food in Poland, or would we get scammed, as we did in Bratislava?!

Let’s find out!

So let’s start with the basics.

ICE-CREAM:

You've not tasted ice-cream, until you've had it at the seaside! 51 reasons to go to the seaside. In Germany!

You really can’t go the seaside if you don’t have any ice-cream!

I mean.

Come on!

The seaside without ice-cream?

And it had better be an Italian gelato, ‘cos what else?

Vanilla ice-cream scoops, wafer sticks, clotted cream and a silver jug of strawberry sauce!

You can even go one better and have an ice-cream sundae of sorts.

I had a huge one on our self-made cycling walking tour in Usedom with vanilla scoops, wafer sticks, clotted cream and a silver jug of strawberry sauce!

Now I don’t like chocolate.

Yuck!

But The Tall Young Gentleman availed himself of the very best near the Zinnowitz pier, so here’s his chocolate ice-cream and clotted-cream-chocolate-chip-sundae!

The Music Producer didn’t have any ice-cream this time and was very happy with his ice-cold Warsteiner premium German beer!

SEAFOOD:

A plate of sardines can be quite delicious!

There were lots and lots of possibilities to eat some sort of seafood. In fact, all sorts of seafood. I mean, OMG!

Here are some pictures.

Sadly, I’ve forgotten the prices, but these seafood items were between €2.00 – €4.00 a piece!

Here are slices of smoked mackerel with berries and lettuce garnish, at the Usedom Palace Hotel breakfast table!

The soused herring, otherwise known as matjes in German, coverd with lettuce and onion slices!

The soused herring above otherwise known as matjes in German or rollmops in English, can be found all over the Baltic Sea coast and is a herring soaked in a mild preserving liquid. It can be raw herring in a mild vinegar pickle or might contain cider, wine or tea, sugar, herbs (usually bay leaf), spices (usually mace), and chopped onion.

It is generally served cold either with a bread bun (brötchen) / bread roll or mixed in sour cream with apple chunks, and onions, or mixed in a beetroot chunk brine, and served with boiled or baked potatoes!

The Music Producer isn’t a fan of raw herrings so the Tall Young Gentleman and I merrily did all the stuffing down ourselves!

Here’s another photograph of my fish bun, otherwise known as Fischbrötchen, made with a pickled or Bismarck herring!

A Bismarck herring  is a delicacy in Europe, and has become a part of Baltic, Nordic, Slavic, and Jewish cuisine! It’s herring cured with salt with similarly added vinegar, peppercorn, bay leaves, raw onions, sherry, mustard and dill.

Our herring was served on kitchen foil in a bread bun (brötchen) with pickles, lettuce and huge slices of fresh raw onions. You can ask for different sauces such as remoulade, creamy horseradish sauce, ketchup, or cocktail sauce too, but we went to an extremely local food hut and we weren’t sure what most of the things were.  There were eels and varieties of fish that I couldn’t identify in German…!

Gulp!

THE USEDOM PALACE HOTEL

We were guests of Usedom Tourismus GmbH and the Usedom Palace Hotel, but we paid for all our meals and transport ourselves.

The Usedom Palace Hotel is a small 40-room traditional style 5-star seaside hotel about five (5) minutes from the sea itself, and a 15 to 20 minute walk to the local train station!

The hotel although modern-ish from the inside, has the look of an antiquated classical German castle, complete with steeple top roof, huge windows, and a white sandstone finish!

We were put in a Gold / Silver Category sea view room.

Our room was huge with a European-style double bed for us, and a single bed for The Tall Young Gentleman with enough space in the room for him to feel that he wasn’t near us!

Our room also had two armchairs, a small glass table, a standing lamp in the corner, and two bedside tables with two more bedside lamps.

The window was huge and you could actually (safely) sit on the window sill and take in the view of the sea, which was clearly in front of us. You can never be entirely sure when hotels describe the view as “sea,” but in this case, it was!

I don’t like air-conditioning in bedrooms.

In fact, I don’t like air-conditioning at all, so it was quite nice to be able to sleep with the windows wide open, and the curtains billowing in the wind!

There was also a huge wardrobe that had fluffy dressing gowns and fluffy slippers for us each, a safe, a mini-bar, a flat-screen TV, a writing desk, plenty of plug holes, and free WiFi!

The bathroom was very nice and had underfloor heating and loads of fluffy towels, a bath, a shower, and hair and body wash items and body lotions.

Be careful with the shower though because the glass covering wasn’t really long or wide enough to prevent water from splashing everywhere, and as The Tall Young Gentleman is indeed quite tall, we soon found ourselves with a bit of a puddle!

The hotel also included a nice swimming pool.

A very nice swimming pool, and a hot tub and sauna free of charge, which I completely forgot about, until a few hours before we had to leave…! And a paid-for spa and massage unit.

I certaintly won't be going to the sauna European style. Don't forget, I'm British!

I really regret not trying out the spa as it really looked nice.

But then again. Maybe not, as this was FKK – Free Body Culture – Nudist territory!

No!

Pleeeeeeeease!

Our hotel stay included a generous buffet breakfast of both Baltic and Nordic origin.

You could sit either indoor or outdoor. For dinner we ate outdoor, but for breakfast, we ate indoors.

For breakfast, we had delicious cold cuts, a variety of seafood, vegetables, sauces, caviar, pickles and cream, scrambled eggs on order, sausages and bacon.

As well as a wide variety of cereal, fruit, bread, cake, pastries, tea, coffee, juices, and help-yourself glasses of champagne!

All this from €225.00 per night in the Gold/Silver Category room (high season) and €145.00 (low season) which for three (3) people wouldn’t be too bad at all!

The thing that really stood out for me was the evening restaurant service. They were quick, full of smiles, and impeccable.

The food was good too!

FANCIER SEASIDE FOOD:

Apart from all the rustic local food that we had above, we also had fancier food which we either had at our hotel, or at a nice restaurant nearby.

As you can see, most of the fancier food items were taken by my husband – aka – The Music Producer – as my camera decided at that moment to run out of battery!

Thankfully, my husband stepped in and took the photographs himself!

Even though I was invited on this trip as a guest of Usedom Tourismus GmbH,  all opinions and the delightful time that we had devouring seaside nosh in Usedom, are my very own!

In the coming weeks, I’ll be writing about travels to Bremen, art and films in Berlin,  as well as a comprehensive post on how to use the train in Europe!

In a few weeks, I’ll be travelling to the TBEX ASIA travel conference in the Philippines, and revealing the extra Chinese-speaking country. It’s a new one!
