In just 2 weeks, the ITB will take place in Berlin, and it’s so exciting!

In my mind, the ITB is one of the best places to go to if you’re a travel blogger, and for me that is where all the magic happened and I met a real-life blogger for the very first time!

Mind you, not all of them were nice, and one person in particular was pretty awful, but this is where I found out how useful my blog was, and where I received my first press trip. A mere five (5) months after my blog came into existence!

I’ve been very lucky!

I’ve also been at the right place at the right time. And where’s that maestro?

Me in front of a piece of the Berlin Wall & Street Art!
Me in front of a piece of the Berlin Wall & Street Art!

Why, Berlin of course!

Berlin is hip and trendy!

Mind you, it really helps if you can speak German, so go ahead, and book a class, and tell them that I sent you!

The other day, I went to a bloggers get-together, and I met a fellow who couldn’t understand how a blog could be made. He thought it was really difficult.

It really isn’t!

Having said that, if you’re going to survive in this business, it helps if you can write really well, or you have some other skill….

Now, I can’t help you with that, but I can show you how to start a blog for yourself.

Here goes!

HOW TO START A BLOG IN JUST A MERE 10 MINUTES: A SIMPLE GUIDE!

For many, when they think of WordPress, they think blog.

WHAT THE HELL IS WORDPRESS?

What the hell is wordpress?
What the hell is wordpress?

WordPress is web publishing software you can use to create your own website, blog, or app. Since it was released in 2003, WordPress has become one of the world’s largest and most popular web publishing platforms. Today it powers more than 70 million websites!

WordPress is much more just a blogging tool. It’s also a highly flexible content management system (CMS) that enables you to build and manage your own full-featured website using just your web browser. Best of all, it’s completely FREE!

And it’s free of charge because WordPress is an Open Source project beause hundreds of volunteers from all around the world constantly create and improve the code for the WordPress software. And, there are thousands of plugins, widgets, and themes that enable you to build just about any type of website you can imagine!

This post will show you how easy it is to get your blog, or website, up and running quickly.

CHOOSE A WEB HOST:

Choose a professional web hosting programme like Bluehost!
Choose a professional web hosting programme like Bluehost!

There are hundreds of thousands of web hosts out there, and choosing one from the crowd can be confusing. Depending on the country that you live in, choose whichever you are comfortable with.

If you don’t need the flexibility of a full web host, you may consider getting a free blog on WordPress.com. which is how I first started. And there’s perfectly nothing wrong with doing that!

However, I also mixed and blended as I went along mapping my free blog with my premium paid host which is why you either see my blog as this or this and if I leave a comment on your website (if you haven’t got one, all the better to be reading this post!), you’ll see my blog as this!

Having said that, if you’re looking for a popular well known host, and a host that won’t suddenly go bankrupt, then Bluehost should definitely be at the top of anyone’s list because Bluehost is one of the only hosting services officially recommended by WordPress and has been the top recommended hosting service for their platform for almost 10 years!

There are many reasons why Bluehost is so highly recommended, but here are just a few:

  • Premium customer service, reliability and usability
  • Easy-to-use control panel
  • Custom-built servers to provide the most stable and reliable hosting environment
  • Quickly get started with a one-click WordPress install, provided by MOJO Marketplace
  • Expert, in-house technical support provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Unlimited websites, email accounts, and domains – all on one account, at an affordable price
  • No gimmicks, no contracts so that you can enjoy the comfort of a 30-day money back guarantee and the option to cancel at any time.

And to sweeten the deal even more, if you sign up through this tutorial, you’ll get a special offer of shared hosting at $3.95/month for 36 months, as well as a free domain name for a year!

To set up your hosting account with Bluehost, follow the steps below.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR HOSTING ACCOUNT:

Set up your hosting account with Bluehost!

Once you do so, the next page will see select your plan.

  • Click Get started now and choose which hosting package you want for a special introductory offer and a 30-day money-back guarantee!
  • On this page you will see three (3) different plan options: Basic, Plus, and Prime. I recommend the basic option at the beginning, and then as your traffic begins to grow and your blog expands, you could always consider upgrading to Plus or Prime.
  • If you’re still not sure, go for the free hosting package on WordPress.com but if you’re ready to get professional or at least look professional from the start, then go for self-hosting instead. Bluehost has great rates and they’ll also give you your domain name for free if you decide to host with them!

  • If you already own a domain name, you can enter it here, and you will just have to go through a few extra steps to make sure you get your DNS pointed to Bluehost.
  • If you don’t already have a domain name, you can purchase one from right in the sign up process, and the best part is, it comes free with your new WordPress hosting account purchase.

So for this you need to choose a domain name for your site:

Choose a really good domain name!
Choose a really good domain name!

Choosing a blog name is extremely difficult! You need a name that’s going to stick, something that’s catchy and memorable, but also something that you can grow with and that won’t make you look like a Silly Billy five (5) years down the line!

Really think about it!

If you make your domain name destination specific, what happens when you move? If you make your domain name age specific, what happens when you grow up? If you make your domain name budget specific, what happens when you start to become successful and can afford much more than a budget of $10.00 a day?

There is a reason that my blog is called The British Berliner.

Before this here blog ever existed, I lived in Berlin, and have always called myself The British Berliner. It used to be a running joke but when you think about it, it fits the label and is what it says on the tin!

I have lived in Berlin for over 15 years. I’m married, have a husband, and a teen. I’m pretty settled, and not likely to move anywhere else.

At least I don’t think so lol!

I’m both British and German.

So think carefully about your domain name.

To help save you money obviously, the longer the term you purchase, the lower the monthly rate will be. By choosing a 36-month hosting term, you can get the great introductory rate of $3.95 per month. • Step 1: Choose where you want to install WordPress. This can be any domain on your account, a subdomain, or a folder for one of your domains.
  • Next, click on Check Domain, which will make sure the domain is assigned and pointing to your account. You may get a warning that you are overwriting files, but as long as you don’t have another website built yet, you can check the box and continue. This is mostly to make sure that you really want to install in that location. If you do have other sites built, you will want to make sure you’re not overwriting something important.
  • Step 2: Show Advanced Options. This section allows you to set up your own username and password for your WordPress install. It’s recommended to use a different username than admin and a very strong password.
  • Make sure that the Automatically create a new database for this installation box is checked, unless you have a database already set up that you want to use.

How to write and publish a book – Introducing The Bee Hive!

The Bee Hive by Simon Adepetun - my very own brother!
The Bee Hive by
Simon Adepetun – my very own brother!

Have you ever wondered if you had the talent, or enough patience, to put all your ideas onto paper and pen? Have you ever thought about writing a book?

Here’s someone who did!

My own brother!

Who has written and published a book.

A real book.

A children’s book!

Published in paper and ink!

Ha! I’m his sister, so I get to interview him first.

Read on!

How to write & publish a book!
How to write & publish a book!
  1. Tell us a little about yourself and your background? What were you like at school? I’m from Manchester, England but currently I reside in a Cheshire town called Great Sankey, in Warrington. I was very energetic as a child so I channelled such energy into sports, story writing, and creating pictures. In my teens, I wrote songs and sang them!
  1. Were you good at English? Yes, my talent outshone all my peers in this area, and beyond. My writing was very neat, stories different to everyone else’s, lovely illustrations created in boxes around the words. I absolutely loved it.
How to write & publish a children's book!
How to write & publish a children’s book!
  1. Is this your first book / Where did you get the idea? Yes it is. It was my sister who gave me the idea! My sister – The British Berliner who lives in Berlin, Germany, handed me a cut-off from an English newspaper (the Guardian), about a children’s novel writing competition. Up until this point, I had never written a children’s novel before, and I only had three (3) months left to submit it! The challenge wasn’t necessarily writing it, but conceiving an idea of what to write! One day while driving to work, I noticed a rundown shed, I pictured a few characters, looked at my kids, thought to myself ‘now there’s an idea’ …. and The Bee Hive novel was born!
  1. What is your book about? It’s a story of how two best friends, aiming to win their school’s scientist of the year award, stumble on a treasure map that they find in a make shift lab, which just happens to be an old Bee Hive. They reluctantly team up with one of the friend’s sister in an attempt to unravel the mystery of the map, and claim the treasure. Add the fact that two hoodlums appear from nowhere, demand back the map, prepare to do everything it takes to retrieve it, and you have a real adventure full of twists and turns!
How to unravel the mystery of the map, and claim the treasure! Ship @ Alina C photography

  1. How much research did you do? When writing a children’s book, it’s important to understand how children act in situations, how they speak, what makes them laugh, how children nowadays relate to their parents, and vice versa. With three young children of my own, and having been a Nursery, Primary and Secondary School Teacher myself, I’ve done all the research possible!
  1. When did you first realise you wanted to be a writer? I’ve always had the passion to write. Since Junior-Primary School, clear evidence of my writing talent starting to ooze out! I guess it was while at University studying English, where I was the first undergraduate ever to win the coveted Kollaj Short Story Competition, and eventually graduating as the Best Creative Writer. It was then that I realised, “hey I could make something here.”
Back to school again!
Back to school again!
  1. Why did you decide to write a book? I’ve spent years writing short stories, plays, novels, and poems, but never concentrated on entering them into writing competitions. I wrote a poem titled ‘March’ and it was published on the UK poetry online platform, due to the excellent feedback received. I then realised, if I’m good enough for the feedback, I must definitely be good enough to write a book and get it published!
  1. How long did it take you to write your book? Just under three (3) months!
It took my brother just under three (3) months to write his book! Aaaargh!
It took my brother just under three (3) months to write his book!
Aaaargh!
  1. What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? I’m a husband and a Dad. Quality time with my family means the world to me, so I write mainly on my day off (Mondays), weekday mornings when the kids are in school, before I go to work, and late at night 23.00 – 01.30, when the whole family is fast asleep.
  1. Do you write full-time or part-time? I write mainly in my spare time.
He mainly writes in his spare time.

  1. Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured? I write when I can carve out the time, but I have a principle not to put my passion for writing ahead of my family. They come first.
  1. Do you write every day? Most days, mainly late at night.
How to write & publish a book!

  1. Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate, longhand, or traditional pen and paper? I write on the PC that I bought in 2002 and it is still faithful to me, and very indestructible! I also write, and scatter about the house scraps of paper to scrawl ideas, before they vanish from my brain!
  1. What gave you the inspiration of a children’s book? My sister – The British Berliner – and my kids’ characters.

  1. How did you decide on the characters? Mainly on my own kids. A little exaggerated, but every reader of the book both children and adults, will be able to relate to the characters’ experience.

  1. Who designed your book cover/s? My Toni daughter, now 12, but 11 years old at the time!

17. Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the creative process? Yes, because the story is unique, the writing technique, and the symbolic book design, all add to its quirkiness! It’s a children’s book written primarily for children, designed by a child.

  1. When did you write your first piece of literature, and how old were you? I must have written stories in drips and drabs over my early years, but Manley Park Junior School was probably where I really got into the art of writing. So I was about seven (7) years old!
  1. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? I like to be with my wife and kids, spending time with them. Being around my family gives me no better feeling.
I like to be with my wife and kids spending time with them.
I like to be with my wife and kids, spending time with them.
  1. What does your family think of your writing? My wife and kids are extremely proud of me. They know I love writing so much, and this experience means as much to me, as it does to them. They have all been promoting the novel to friends at school, and colleagues at University.
  1. What was the most surprising thing you learned in creating and writing your book? Two things: God loves a grafter and boy, did I graft for this novel! Secondly, be determined to go for it, no matter what it is you want to achieve, because if you don’t, you might think in years to come…”if only….”
Lots of graft is needed!
Lots of graft is needed!
  1. As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? I wanted to be a footballer.
I wanted to be a football player!
I wanted to be a football player!
  1. Many fellow bloggers and writers would kill to get a hardback book published. How did you do it? I approached four (4) publishers with the manuscript of my book. They read the first three (3) chapters, liked it, and requested the whole book! All four (4) publishers thought it a viable venture and wanted to publish the novel, so I chose the publisher I felt, wanted me most!
  1. Some people are a bit put off by the hard work and loneliness of being a new writer, so where’s a good place to start if you want to learn how to be a published author, or a good creative writer? Follow writers’ blogs, let them take you on a journey from despair, to one of joy and redemption. A case of hard work, determination, the will to succeed, the “Yes, I can” attitude, and patience, is all that is required.

This article is not sponsored and all opinions and the very excitement of my brothers’ first children’s’ book, are my very own!

Please also note that there is now an Amazon affiliate link UK and Amazon affiliate link DE (for the very first time) connected to the cookery books. I told you that I liked reading ’em! Everytime a book is sold via my link in Amazon UK or Amazon DE, I get a little percentage, but at no extra cost to yourself! A win-win for all!

p.s. Go ahead and buy his book or if you prefer to buy from Amazon.de, you can buy my brother’s book here!

Thanks so much.

In the summer I’ll be going to Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and possibly Russia!

From May 18th – May 22nd, I’ll be at the Berlin Music Video Award.

From June 2nd – June 3rd, I’ll be at the Berlin Fashion Film Festival.

From June 28th – July 2nd, I’ll be at Berlin Fashion Week.

Save the Date!

May & June are going to be fabulous!

I’ll be there. Will you?

As usual, you can also follow me via daily tweets and pictures on Twitter & Facebook!

If you’re not in Berlin in May, you can’t be breathing!

Watch this space!

Have you ever wondered if you had the talent, or enough patience, to put all your ideas onto paper and pen? Have you ever thought about writing a book?
